About DawnSeeker

I’ve always wondered about the BIG questions in Life — Why are we here? What are we to do during the time we have here? Where did Mom, Dad, Grandparents go after they left this green Earth? What’s the best way to live?

I was raised in an idyllic childhood on the beach in Malibu — with the Ocean in my back yard! But all that soon changed.

My Dad died when I was 16. (Dad’s music, Dawn’s story: You Can Do ANYTHING!)

At that time I could have gotten into bad things. But I decided to go up, to go into good!

My Grandma, Dad’s mom, was a Christian Scientist. She told me that God is Love. So I strive to find the good, the Love in Life.

Have I always succeeded? No. But I can only imagine my Life if I hadn’t bothered to try! (See post: Imperfect Perfectionist.)

I’ve always kept a Journal. It’s how I remain sane. My Journal is my constant in an ever-changing Life. It’s how I work out the BIG questions, and the small; how I navigate the Journey that Life musingly tosses before me. (See post: Why Journal?)*

I figure I’ll share that Journal, that Journey, with you!

DawnSeeker

*Another way I’ve sought to navigate Life is by coming up with Strategies to tackle Life’s stumbling blocks. Check out my: Depression Emergency Kit, Runaway Emergency (Emotional) Escape Ramp, and The Assignment: Guide to Greater Happiness for Strategies to help make it through this Journey we call Life :))

Who is Dawn?

Good 'ol Chap

Dawn Jenkins, Lady Farrier

Farrier (Horseshoer), Horsewoman, Entrepreneur, Photographer, Writer, Pilot.

Before Dawn was 20 she: set out alone for 10 days on her horse, Rebel, into the wilderness of the Los Padres National Forest (outside Santa Barbara); worked as horse wrangler/trail guide for the UCSB Recreation Department; moved to Enumclaw Washington; built an 18′ Sioux Indian Tipi; lived in her tipi in a cow pasture; and worked on a Dairy Farm  in the milking parlor, milking cows  taking care of “the Girls” (all 120 of them!).

In her 20’s Dawn: jumped out of a perfectly good airplane; got her Private Pilot license; started her own fashion business; flew 300 flight hours throughout Southern California; worked as freelance business/Life Coach/consultant in Silicon Valley; and bought her yearling Appaloosa/Running Quarter/Thoroughbred/Arab mare, Fanta, the foundation of her four generations of endurance and carriage horses.

Now she: rides and loves her four (Fanta-descendant) horses; trims and shoes horses in Southern California; and has completed 14 years of flying to Hawaii every 6 weeks to trim and shoe horses in Paradise! Yahoo!

Please check out Little Yellow Door, the inspiration for my blog, by my daughter, Ellaharp. (And listen to her music.)

“Working on this project through the build year, I got so bogged down in the process that I think I almost forgot that when it was done it would be my home. Every time I drive in and see the tiny little A frame smiling at me with its tiny little porch light I get all proud and fuzzy.

“I’ve found my house to be an unusual crossroads of exactly what I wanted and exactly what I needed. Perhaps I’m still in the honeymoon phase with Little Yellow, but I wouldn’t live in anything else for the world.”   Little Yellow Life

I watched Ella build and blog Little Yellow, her Tumbleweed Tiny House on Wheels. (Frankly, given our family’s aversion to computers and technology, I was more surprised at her ability to BLOG than to BUILD her own Tiny Home — and determined to to start a blog (two!) of my own : ~ ))

Malcolm, I really like the quote you included in your post:

“…Without the heartache [of Depression] I would never have learned who I really am, and come to understand the power of acceptance. Without the despair, I would not have had the desire to become a better person…Every great change in my life was precipitated by insights gained during depression. Depression has served the function of changing my life for the better.”

The power of acceptance cannot be overstated. For from here, we can move forward to overcoming.

Thank you for your kindness Dawn, hope you have a good weekend. I do like your blog and even though I live in east Tennessee I really love it out west and your Pic reminds me of extreme southern Cal off of interstate #8 in the hill country just east of SD. i don’t know if that is the area you call home but the back ground area in your pic reminds me of there, it’s a beautiful area.

Yes, Southern California has a wonderful charm. I’m 5th generation Californian, so I’m a bit biased . . . Our forest is behind Santa Barbara. I hail from the beach in Malibu, and I’m fortunate to still work there. Pretty cool, really.

Hello Dawn, thanks for visiting, I love horses but was on one only once and I wish I was courageous enought to ride. They sure are beautiful.
You may like to watch klaus Hempling on YouTube, he is amazing how he trains them, so gently.

Yes, so much magic to working with horses — and Klaus blows the mind. I’m amazed at how these majestic creatures allow us into their world. I mean, we RIDE them. Flow with them. Become part of their herd, their world. Simply amazing!

Write on! I take my handwritten journal with me in my travels, in my car — ready to write when I feel the need. Also have a computer journal. Both seem to help access the state I’m in at the time and make it easier to write, dream, sort, figure Life out . . . You go! :))

Thank you, Randall :)) I love your post, http://dalocollis.com/2015/12/31/slowing-down-the-perception-of-time/, and I’ve enjoyed referring some new folks to your site:))

The photos are deeply expressive, the philosophical observations beautifully woven — a real treat — and a definite reminder about the fickle nature of time!

    Hi Dawn,
I emailed you a couple days ago at the address you provided on this blog! It was merely to see if you would be interested in chatting (same style as we did on my comment thread, but not on a comment thread, to allow for extrapolation and better conversation). If not, I understand – you’re a busy woman! But I would love to learn about your life with horses and planes! I’m personally in ground school right now, had a horse when I was younger and was always interested in riding, and I think there are many other similarities we share, too 🙂 so feel free to drop me a line!
You have so much to offer the world, and I thank you for sharing your words thus far. 🙂

Actually, I sent my anvil and tools home last year, after completing 14 years of travel — over 120 round-trips. Completely awesome, all the friends and horses and sweat I came to know there :)) Now I call my friends there on the phone, and save the travel effort! I really enjoy your blog, Lissa. We have much in common in our horse perspectives :))
